The Process

The process starts with an initial enquiry, be it over the phone or via email. Once you’ve contacted us, you’re on your way. It’s a small step but a significant one.

We’ll take your essential details so we can start to understand your situation. You’ll also be given an information pack which explains what it’s like to be a foster carer.

After you’ve been in touch, we’ll start the process of getting to know you. There will be some initial paperwork followed by a home visit, providing Covid-19 regulations allow. If not, we’ll set up a video call instead. It’s crucial that we form a relationship with you from the start, so we can understand who means the most to you and learn where home is.

We deliver a three-day training course to equip you with the skills and information you require for fostering. You’ll have the chance to meet members of the Foster Wales Anglesey team and other carers in the local area in an informal setting.

During this stage, you’ll learn what fostering will mean for you. It’s important to remember that the assessment isn’t a test. It’s an opportunity for us to understand your family dynamics and a chance for you and your family to ask us any questions. Assessments are carried out by social workers and consider a family’s strengths and vulnerabilities.

Our panel is made up of educated, skilled social care workers and independent members. They review your assessment from all angles and look at every single foster carer as an individual.

Recommendations on what might work best for your personal circumstances will be provided by members of the Foster Wales panel.

After the panel has considered your assessment, the foster care agreement sets out what it means to be a foster carer. This covers roles and responsibilities along with the wider support and guidance you’ll provide. The agreement also includes how we’ll support you along your journey, and all the specific services you’ll be entitled to as part of our team.
